The inside was a bit sparse right now. They usually used it when they were hauling a bunch of valuable objects that they wanted to be careful with, like Prime Ones artifacts or that one time they transported an endangered specimen to a research lab at a university on Galterre.

On very rare occasions, when they were in desperate need of money, they did some gunrunning and used the vault to hold those.

Now, there was nothing in the vault aside from a small silver case, its metal gleaming in the low red light.

Inside, the two Prime Ones devices that the Lightbringer was so eager to get its hands on.

“Melias, what are you doing?” Niath asked as she and the others stopped behind him. Concern tinged her words. He could feel it in the air around them all.

He didn’t answer her right away. Instead, he walked up to the box, bent down, and scooped it into his arms. It took a bit of force to pry it from the magnetized floor, but it gave without too much effort.

“Captain…” Arke whispered, which sounded much louder in the confined space.

“We need to know,” he said, turning to them. Their faces were aghast, sitting between horror and concern. He didn’t think he was acting all that strange. It wasn’t as if he never did things without thinking.

“Don’t say what I think you’re going to say…” Ixion said.

Melias looked at each in turn. “There are so many questions we have, so many that leave us blind to all of this, everything going on. We need answers, and I know how we’ll get them.”

Without explaining further, he pressed his thumb to the cold lid of the box where the small biometric scanner was. It read his prints, then the latch came undone, and he opened it to reveal the two small devices inside.

They were similar to one another, but they were different in key ways. The first, which they had recovered way back on Hephaestus when they first encountered the Lightbringer, was cool to the touch and had a chromatic sheen to it in the red light of the room. The device itself gave off a light of its own, a pale pink-purple, faint but present, emanating from its seams. It was hard to tell, but the inside seemed to be crystalline in some way. There was a notch on one end, like a thin oval carved into the top. Three dials ran down the center.

The second was very similar, but the seams were thicker, more intricate, and held a deeper light, a bluish glow coming from within. For this one, he was certain there was an object inside made of crystal. On the end, where the oval notch was on the other, there was instead an oval protrusion, and it made him think that the two devices could be combined.

He brought the two devices together along the notch and protrusion. He didn’t put them together, but he could see that they did indeed fit. It seemed clear that the two could be combined.
